In 2005 we were approached by a very successful business entrepreneur who acquired a small Canadian aerospace parts manufacturer based in west end Toronto. The company was almost bankrupt and the previous owner/ operator wanted out. My client had prior business experience as a very successful manufacturer of sophisticated water filtering systems for the semi-conductor industry. My client loved the aerospace market sector, but lacked the industry contacts necessary to get his company’s landing gear products off the ground.He quickly became frustrated was looking for some advice and support.
During my initial meeting with the new owner I informed him that the commercial and defense aerospace industries are quite unique and highly regulated. In this market sector quality is of the utmost importance and he would likely need to prove the ability to deliver quality machined parts on time and budget, through a second or third tier aerospace parts supplier. This marketing process would take years to establish and would also be costly.
I sensed this entrepreneur was very inpatient to achieve success. He was willing to work hard to establish his parts business and increase his company profile in the Canadian aerospace manufacturing market sector.He also indicated he was prepared to make the necessary financial investment through acquisitions. He was determined circumvent the “Old Boy” network by hiring the best industry people we could recruit to his company. With more than 30 years experience in this market sector I knew that his company’s landing gear products would require developing a close working relationships with global landing gear manufacturers. As such, I suggested he consider forming a small informal Advisory Board of Directors. The directors would be retired industry executives from world class landing gear manufacturers. They would help provide my client with the appropriate network of high level aerospace industry contacts. This in turn would serve two purposes allowing retired aerospace directors to maintain the contacts they have developed over their entire careers. It would also provide my client with desired credibility and contacts required to become an accepted industry supplier to the global aerospace landing gear supply chain.
The idea was a great success and not only were we successful in hiring the two former CEO’s of the two largest landing gear manufacturers, we additionally hired two retired former Global VP’s from the two largest commercial aircraft manufacturers in the world. The results opened sales doors at the appropriate executive levels, spurring double digit growth, and expedited the quality certification processes for my client. Our executive search process ultimately strives to ensure both a better business fit and cultural fit. Our client grew this business to become a leading global supplier of landing gear parts within a five year period.
